Non-construction Aggregate (aglime, high calcium stone, magnesium stone, filler material, etc.)

Agricultural, Chemical and Industrial Materials

About twenty percent of the aggregates produced annually in the United States is sold for non-construction use in agriculture, chemical processing and industrial production. Because of their availability and desirable chemical properties, there are literally thousands of applications for these aggregates that help enhance our quality of life.

For example, Vulcan produces agricultural limestone, or aglime, for use in areas with moderate to heavy rainfall where soils tend to become acidic over time. Proper use of aglime helps neutralize the soil. In addition, aglime increases the efficiency of fertilizer nutrients and the effectiveness of some herbicides, resulting in higher sustained soil productivity.

Vulcan is also a leading producer of high calcium and magnesium stone — also known as chemical stone. These products are used in the production of lime, which is later used in food processing, water treatment, sulfur dioxide emission control, production of steel and the neutralization of coal mining and industrial wastes.

In many other important industrial applications our materials are used in the following ways.
To help remove undesirable products from stack exhausts at coal fired utilities;
To precipitate out certain heavy metals in landfills;
As an important input in the manufacturing process for Portland cement, glass, pulp and paper, and non-ferrous metals; and
As a filler in many other products such as paint, rubber, plastics, paper, roofing, toothpaste and digestion aids.
