Division Profile
The Southern and Gulf Coast Division operates production and distribution
facilities in nine states including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois,
Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas. We also have facilities
in Mexico. In terms of geographic coverage, the division is the largest
of Vulcans aggregates divisions. Due to the geologic and geographic
limitation in the markets we serve, significant portions of the Divisions
products are moved long distances to reach our consumers. Transportation
modes to distant markets include movement by rail, river barges, and oceangoing
vessels. To locate or learn more about a facility near you, use our Facility
Finder.
The Division was formed in early 2001 through the merger
of two Vulcan divisions the Southern and the Vulcan Gulf Coast
divisions. The January 2001 announcement of Vulcans intent to purchase
our Mexican partners interest in the Crescent Market Companies provided
the opportunity to combine the two formerly separate divisions to better
serve customers and to gain operating efficiencies.
The origins of the Southern Division date back to the
early 1900s and the Birmingham Slag Company, which became part of Vulcan
Materials Company when it was formed in 1956. The company took slag, a
by-product of iron and steel manufacturing, and crushed it for use in
construction. The Southern Division used this early position to expand
into the stone quarrying business.
While the Southern Division represents one of the oldest
parts of the company, the Vulcan Gulf Coast Division was one of the newest
divisions having been formed in 1987 in partnership with a Mexican company.
Out of this partnership, the Crescent Market Companies were created to
operate the production, shipment, and marketing of aggregates in various
Gulf Coast markets, where natural stone for aggregates use is in short
supply. The primary operating facility of the joint venture is the Sac
Tun quarry located on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.
By combining two separately operating divisions into the
Southern and Gulf Coast Division, we look forward to achieving continued
success with the customers and communities we serve.
We operate our facilities in a socially responsible manner.
